La Tombe du Robot

The Wild Robot

La Tombe du Robot is the rocky northern coastline of the island, a place that becomes the graveyard of the robot cargo that washed ashore. It is here that the final crate, carrying Roz, crashes against the remains of four earlier crates and is flung onto a high rocky plateau, leaving the robot inside safe but the box cracked and crumpled. The shore itself is littered with the broken bodies of four dead robots, their metal gleaming in the early morning light, a sight that draws the attention of curious creatures. This location is not merely a setting but the very threshold of Roz's existence on the island, the place where she first emerges into the world, takes her first steps, and confronts the evidence of her own kind's mortality.

A Shore of Broken Machines

The northern coast of the island had become a kind of robot tomb. The broken bodies of four dead robots were scattered across the rocks, gleaming in the light of the early morning. These sparkling objects attracted the attention of a band of sea otters, who were gamboling in the shallows when one of them noticed the shiny things. The otters froze, raised their noses to the wind, but smelled only the sea, so they crept cautiously onto the rocks to observe the strange sight more closely. When Roz emerged from her crate, the otters hid behind a rock, nervously watching the sparkling monster as it turned its head all the way around until it looked directly at them. The robot's voice was simply too loud for the nervous creatures; the largest otter squeaked and the whole band suddenly fled, galloping across the robot graveyard, collapsing into the ocean, and running through the waves as fast as they could.

Roz's Awakening and First Steps

As Roz watched the otters leave, her eyes lingered on the glittering objects that littered the shore, which seemed strangely familiar. She swung her left leg forward, then her right, and in this way she took her first steps. She moved away from her crate, crossed the rocks, and walked through the graveyard until she stood over a broken robot body. Bending down, she noticed the word ROZZUM lightly engraved on its torso, and she noticed the same word on all the torsos, including her own. This discovery of her own kind, lying dead around her, was her first profound realization about her place in the world. Her exploration was interrupted by a small playful ocean wave that washed over the rocks, from which she automatically moved away. A larger wave then crashed over her, and she retreated again. Finally, a gigantic wave smashed against the rocks and engulfed the entire graveyard, the heavy water striking her body and throwing her to the ground, activating her damage sensors for the first time. A moment later the wave was gone, and Roz lay there, dripping, dented, and surrounded by dead robots.

A Place of Return and Reflection

The graveyard remained a significant place for Roz long after her initial awakening. When she later descended the cliff with Brightbill, the gosling floating in the breeze beside his mother, they returned to the rocky coast with the cliffs looming behind them. The place had changed. Roz's crate had disappeared, lost to weather or waves. Some robot parts had also vanished, while others were grainy with sand, tangled in seaweed, or inhabited by small creatures that scurried about. A shattered torso still had a head and legs attached. Roz and Brightbill huddled around the corpse and studied the mess of tubes coming out of it. When Brightbill asked if the thing looked like her, Roz confirmed that they were the same type of robot. This return visit served as a moment of shared understanding between mother and son, grounding Brightbill's knowledge of his mother's origins in the physical evidence of her kind's fragility.

The RECO Hunt and the Final Stand

The graveyard became the stage for the climax of Roz's island life when the RECO robots arrived. As RECO 1 crossed the robot graveyard, the geese cried and the otters squealed. The place was strewn with torsos, limbs, and heads, all valuable parts, but the hunter's only concern was finding Roz. He followed the electronic signal to a clump of seaweed, but where was his target? The RECO 1's sensor seemed defective, and the robot tapped its head repeatedly, but the mysterious signal remained. As it looked around for other signs of her, the clump of seaweed rose up and seized its rifle. After the target was disabled, RECO 1 serenely moved to the next phase of its mission, limping through the graveyard and collecting every piece of the robot. It dove into the shallows and returned with a foot, shook the sand from a cracked torso, and pulled a head from a tide pool. Each piece was then piled around Roz's lifeless body. Brightbill watched in horror as his mother slowly disappeared under a pile of spare parts, looking like the dead robots, though she was not dead, merely shut down. The graveyard, which had witnessed Roz's birth into the world, now witnessed her apparent destruction, as the very ground that held the remains of her kind became the site of her own disassembly.
